The Central Information Service which was constituted with effect from 1st March 1960 has been renamed as the Indian Information Service. (Changes may be due to Prasar Bharati Act). Indian Information Service was formed in the year 1987. It is one of the Groups-A Central Civil Service in India.
The Indian Information Service is a Central civil service of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The officers of the IIS are posted in various media organization and departments of central Governments such as: Press Information Bureau, News Service division of Doordarshan he and All India Radio, Directorate of Film Publicity, DAVP, etc. At the initial stage of their careers, the officers work at an operational level in various media organizations and gradually they take up positions at directional and conceptual levels of management of government media. The service is multi disciplinary in its basic nature and incorporates all the areas of media and communication.
FUNCTION
The duties of an IIS officers is to broadcasting the information on the government policies, programmes and activities through print, electronic, audio and video media.
Providing the feedback on the reactions of the people to the programmes and policies and of advising the government on its information policy is also one of the duties of an IIS officer. Keeping in view the multidisciplinary nature of the service, the officers are trained in all areas of media and communication which include print media, electronic media, advertising and public relations, development communication, information technology, presentation skill, negotiation skills etc. The focus of the training is on information gathering and formulating information policies and strategies. The main objective of the training is to create a cadre of officers who are excellent media managers and information advisors; effective public communicators and PR professionals: good Public service broadcasters and IEC & social marketing. The training will attempt to bring out the best in each probationer and try to develop her skills so that they can achieve their full potential. The syllabus has tried to give a greater emphasis to practical training, which is initially to be imparted under stimulated condition. Later on in the training the probationers will be placed in an actual job situation where their practical knowledge and experience will be tested. Direct recruits to the Junior Grade will be on probation for two years. During Probation, the) will be given professional training in the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi for a period of 11 months. The period and nature of training will be Liable to alteration by Government. During the training, they will have to pass departmental test(s). Failure to pass die departmental test(s) during the training period involves liability to discharge from sender or reversion to substantive post. On the conclusion of period of probation, government may confirm the direct recruitments in their appointments in accordance with the rules in force. If the work or conduct of an officer on probation is unsatisfactory he will be discharged from service or his period of probation extended for such period as the government may deem fit of work or his conduct is such as to show that he is unlikely to become efficient he may be discharged forthwith. Officers on probation shall start on die minimum of the time scale of junior grade group A and will count their service for increment from the date of joining.
IIS Training Program:
24 months (3 months at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration) and 21 months at Indian Institute of Mass Communication.
The entire IIS training and probation period of two years for officers trainees of IIS is divided into eight trimesters out of which one trimester will be spent in Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie for the Foundation Course and remaining at IIMC for Foundation Courses in Communication.

The 50 percent of vacancies in the Junior grade of IIS Group
A are filled by direct recruitment. The remaining vacancies
to the Grade and also vacancies in the Senior Administrative
Grade/ Junior Administrative Grade are filled by promotions
by selection from amongst officers holding duty posts in die
next lower grade.
